In computing, a device driver or software driver is a computer program allowing higher-level computer programs to interact with a hardware device.
A driver typically communicates with the device through the computer bus or communications subsystem to which the hardware is connected. When a calling program invokes a routine in the driver, the driver issues commands to the device. Once the device sends data back to the driver, the driver may invoke routines in the original calling program. Drivers are hardware-dependent and operating-system-specific. They usually provide the interrupt handling required for any necessary asynchronous time-dependent hardware interface.

I'm using the Windows XP Professional operating system. I've done every conceivable thing that I can imagine. Is there any way to "trick" this scanner into working? I have noticed one peculiar thing though: When I unplug the SCSI cable from the SCSI port on the Presario, the scanner lights up, even jestures a little like it's alive then dies off to oblivion! There are drivers that come with it but dun seem to work. The drivers name are Heavy Metal and Ambient. The computer can read the drivers but when it runs Comfix, there is an illegal operation. I am running on Window 98. What is Comfix? Is there any other driver for it? My second modem is external. The model name is Lucent and the model numner is V1456VQE. It a dark grey colour modem. 2 9 270 1 0 dell4500 and "lost hyperthreading" capability Hi it's me againActually my biggest driver issue is one with my Dell dimension 4500.The following post to Dell's Forums has been deleted twice (if not three by now)text belowNote: if you run across this post elsewhere let me know as I could not find my first attempt as it seems to have mysteriously disappeared.I am trying not to be annoyed with Dell. Considering I just spent two hours of my time convincing two non native speakers of English that my speakers were broken (step one, tell them what you have already done. Step two, repeat all the same steps for the rep-Nope still doesnt work. Step three, talk to intermediary rep, Step four talk to advanced rep1. and repeat steps one and two): it is a bit difficult. In any case, Dell upgrade sales tells me I can put a 2.8 GHz chip in my x1 467 socket on the 4500 board. Technical support rep 1 says no upgrade is available at all. Technical support 2 Rep says I have an 865 chipset(if that is true than this board will soon meet with a drop of water so that they can replace this board with another 865. Gee. I guess hyperthreading would not be a problem then. Tech support rep three finally decided I have an 845e chipset and Sissandra squealed in delight at being right all along. I guess I am glad I didnt have a glass of water near at hand. In any case, ao4 bios revision does not claim to support hyperthreading. Yet all versions of the Intel 845e chipset supported hyperthreading from the get-go. It is clear that Dell wants to hold on to that little secret as a strategy to preserve model line demarcation and incentivize nOObs to buy entire new systems. That is fine if Dell has decided to market only to nOObs. If that is the case then I will be sure to never buy one from them again as I would be overqualified in this strategys eyes. Dont get me wrong, I certainly did not spec this system for myself, but for my son who took it off to college, and promptly crashed and burned, forcing me to repossess said system. In any case, my question is this why cant I simply bag Dells bios version and get one straight from Intel which does support hyperthreading. If the answer is Gee no, that would conflict with some other Dell ordered downgrading of the main board then Dell needs to grow-up and rethink its strategy. Fine, make it hard for the nOObs, overtly order your sales and tech support people to intentionally misdirect call-ins, but for the ones who actually think of A: opening the case and looking. B: asking Sis. C: researching the board; I think Dell should find a way to quietly E-mail a real enabled bios to them. Just look at the auto makers secret warranty practices as a model. Frankly, I wonder if we will see in the future a mass class action l-suit 2. against Dell for this practice. I have seen class actions win big with a hell of a lot less to go on than this. Dell=Deep pockets +juries=stupid = settlements with lots of zeroes(most of which trimmed of by the lawyers of course).1. Advanced rep defined: speaks marginally better English.2. Dells profanity screener apparently defines the common term for a formal writ of tort filed in civil court as objectionable. Also the Floppy drive (A 3 1/2" drive, which I know works) shows up as a 5 1/4" floppy drive in 'My Computer' and i am unable to read any floppy's or do anything with it.. However, now the video graphics suck - I don't know what happened, but I can't get past 800x600 with 16 colors. Before the reformat, I could get 1024x768 with 24-bit (true) color. I was able to find the driver for my monitor (a Packard Bell C920), and it's installed, but I'm thinking the problem is with the video adapter, which Windows 98 may have a hard time detecting. Win98SE originally detected a "Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)" which only allowed 640x480 with 16 colors - I had to change it to Super VGA just to allow 800x600. I can perform hotsync functions perfectly but cannot use msexport. It needs a device driver. When I use the msimport function on the clie and press "connect" (should connect to the pc), a new hardware detected window pops up saying that a "sony PEG mass storage device" has been detected.I can't seem to locate the driver required to install this 'new device' anywhere.
