Original MessageIt has been brought to my attention that there's an insidious new computer virus which has already affected close to 30 million computers. Even though I'm running the latest McAfee and Norton viri scans, neither have picked up this virus as it's a mutating virus which isn't set to go off until Friday, June 8, 2001. As many viri are, this one is transmitted by email. I'm required by law to contact everyone that has received email from me in the last six months and warn them about this virus. TO REMOVE THIS VIRUS BEFORE IT BECOMES EFFECTIVE: ** Click your start button. ** Click on "Find". ** Click on Files / Folders. ** Change the "look in" input box to "My Computer". ** The named input file should have: AOL.EXE Once the find engine has located the file, highlight it and press the delete button. Deleting this file will fix a damaged 30 megabyte area of your hard drive and restore it to full functionality. WARNING: KEEPING THIS FILE ON THE SYSTEM AFTER JUNE 8 WILL COST YOU $2.90 MORE PER MONTH! FAILURE TO REMOVE THIS FILE WILL KEEP YOUR "UPPER MEMORY MANAGEMENT" MODULE OF YOUR INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT (IQ OVER 85) BLOCKED. DELETING AOL.EXE WILL FREE YOUR IQ TO GO ABOVE 85!!! DELETING THIS FILE WILL ALLOW YOU TO SPELL CORRECTLY AND USE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROPERLY. BADLY INFECTED SYSTEMS (I.E., SYSTEMS THAT HAVE DESTROYED YOUR ABILITY TO FOLLOW THE SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS ABOVE) CAN HAVE THE VIRUS REMOVED BY TELEPHONE. CALL 1-888-265-8008 AND TELL THE OPERATOR TO CANCEL THE VIRUS. THE OPERATOR WILL DEACTIVATE THE VIRUS FROM THEIR END. TECHNICAL NOTE: YOU **MUST** EXPLAIN TO THE OPERATOR YOU'RE ATTEMPTING TO DEACTIVATE THE AOL.EXE VIRUS. THE TECHNICAL SUPPORT OFFICE YOU'RE TALKING TO IS EXTREMELY PROFESSIONALLY EMBARRASSED BY UNLEASHING THIS VIRUS ON THE WORLD AND WILL DELAY DEACTIVATING IT. FOR LEGAL REASONS, THEY MAY EVEN *DENY* THE EXISTENCE OF THE AOL.EXE VIRUS. DON'T FALL FOR THEIR STORY!
You would certainly not remove all the blue wires under your automobile's dashboard because a perfect stranger told you they were "infected". So you should never remove anything from your computer just because some one tells you so. This page http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html is a great place to start if you think something might be a hoax. (Always assume it is a hoax)
You will have to reinstall AOL from a disk if the file is no longer in your recycle bin. If it is then just right click it and choose restore.[;)]Home Computer Repair's Senior Technician 20030908142223 207.243.169.54 1 0 2 19 11 13 0 16 I need more information about your MOBO.(motherboard)When you first boot it I need the string of numbers at the bottom of the screen, and the name of the board.....like ASUS or AMD, ok?The bios number and date at the top of the screen at boot time.I need those to get the right drivers. 20030911213215 148.78.243.25 1 0 5 10 13 14 0 1 Visit our Driver Request service and fill out the form and we will see if we can find the proper Linux drivers for you. http://www.homecomputerrepaironline.com/downloads/drivers.cfm[;)]Home Computer Repair's Senior Technician 20030912000614 12.218.142.90 1 0 2 19 14 15 0 1 Jeff,It sounds like you have lost the use of your CDROM drive. Purchase a CDROM drive cleaning kit at your local electronics store. If this does not help, right click on MY COMPUTER and select properties. Depending on your version of Windows find the Device Manager which lists all of your installed devices. If any item in the list has a yellow exclamation mark next to it, remove it and restart the computer. The next thing to try is to shut down and unplug the computer. Open the case of the computer and be sure the wide data cable that goes from the back of the CDROM drive to the main circuit board (motherboard)is firmly connected. Also check the other wires connected to the back of the CDROM drive. If all else fails you may need a new CDROM drive. Visit http://www.shopthegeek.com for our wide selection. If you have valuable data on your hard drive we strongly recommend that you take it to a computer service center as soon as possible. One of the possible causes for this could be hard drive failure. Restarting the system could render data that may still be reachable, unreachable. [V]Home Computer Repair's Senior Technician 20030917204519 12.218.142.90 1 0 2 19 20 20 0 1 Boot the computer from a Windows start-up floppy disk and run scandisk by typing scandisk c: at the A:/. If your drive is still good this will let you know. Be sure to run the surface scan also if asked. If it is a bad hard drive you will need to have it replaced. Hard drives are anywhere between $70-200 depending on size. You will have to reinstall Windows once the drive is correctly installed (follow instructions with install disk provided with drive). The Windows install can be very involved since you will need drivers for all of your hardware. It is recommended you have it done by a pro. These CDs are designed only to use on the machine model they ship with. Furthermore, Windows XP has to be "activated" once installed and this prevents you from installing it on more than one system as per Microsoft's licensing agreement. As for your 98 box I would suggest you go to http://www.bootdisk.com and get a free boot disk for your version of Windows 98. You can use this disk to start the system in DOS mode with CDROM access so you can reinstall Win98 from it's CD. Good Luck! The warning about rendering the computer inoperable is of obvious concern to me. Do you mean to imply that even a qualified technician performing the procedure might ruin the machine? If you feel like this is something you can handle thing go for it. You should check and clean any part of the panel that has been possibly breached by the water. If you have access to a different power supply to try you should do so. Another thing to do is by-pass any surge protector and plug the system directly into the wall. This will indicate if the surge protector is at fault. If this does not work, open the case with the system unplugged and reseat the all the add-in cards and the RAM chips. When you power the system backup with the case still off check to be sure all of teh fans are spinning fast. Still no luck? Unplug all the drives except the floppy drive (cdroms, hard drives) and try to boot to a windows floppy boot disk. If you do not have one go to http://www.bootdisk.com and get one for your operating system. If the boot is successful then power down and reconnect the primary hard drive. Boot without a floppy If this is successful, add the other drives one at a time until you locate the culprit. If the boot fails it is probably a software issue. Restart the system and begin slowly tapping the F8 key until you get a boot menu. From this menu choose "Safe Mode" and if you can boot then you need to find the bad program or driver that is causing the restarts and remove or disable it. Good luck. [;)]

After showing the Compaq logo on screen for about 5 seconds the computer starts trying to read from the drives but shuts down almost immediately and starts over. I get no beep, no text on the screen except 5 seconds of logo and nothing to indicate that the computer is actually doing anything except the drives spinning a little before the thing shuts down. I spliced in a new power switch and this has done nothing for me but waste a few minutes of my time. Before I proceed to take the whole thing apart and examine all of it to see what may be wrong, does anyone have a suggestion?

For security, computers that connect to the Internet through broadband technology (for example, cable or DSL) should have a firewall. MSN Messenger will first attempt to connect directly so that you can use all of the MSN Messenger features. If MSN Messenger cannot connect directly, it will use the same HTTP connection that your default browser uses to connect to the Internet. To find out what kind of connection you have, in the main MSN Messenger window, click the Tools menu, and then click Options. Click the Connection tab.For the time being you will have to send pics as email attachments. To make file transfers in Instant Messenger work, the computer administrator at his end will have to do the following. (Note: If you have a firewall on your system, you may be the one who needs to do this. Being the Military, I am sure it is at his end.)1)Open as many TCP ports as you can between 6891 and 6900. 2)Configure the TCP ports so that sockets on a port remain open for an extended period of time. Note:If you are transferring files to a person who is using MSN Messenger 5.0 or earlier and you are using a network address translator (NAT), file transfer will not work unless you have a Universal Plug and Play NAT (UPnP NAT). If you are not sure what type of NAT you have, check with your computer manufacturer or NAT vendor. Make sure they test it with everything hooked up such as, external drives, usb devices, printer, etc. Anyone of these could be conflicting with your modem at home but not at the repair shop.Home Computer Repair's Senior TechnicianIf we have helped you please go to http://www.homecomputerrepaironline.com/donationpage.html to make a donation for our efforts.<hr>Visit http://www.ShopTheGeek.com for all your computer needs!

Just do a search on Google for LCD replacement screens. Note: It may be that your backlight has gone out, not the entire panel. If you can still make out a faint image, this may be the case. As far as replacing it, it is just a matter of removing the shround around the screen. You will notice some small dots on the bottom of the monitor bezel. Pry these up with a small knife. There will be screws under them. This is where you start.
